Roundup Cancer Lawyers
Roundup is a herbicide used around the world by farmers, landscapers, gardeners, maintenance workers, groundskeepers, agricultural workers, and homeowners to help kill weeds. In the United States alone, over 250 million pounds of glyphosate, the active ingredient in Roundup, ends up on farmer’s crops as well as driveways, lawns, nurseries, golf courses, and the grassy areas of parks.
Monsanto, an offshoot of the Bayer Company, introduced Monsanto Roundup to the public in 1974 after it discovered that its active ingredient kills weeds. It does this by blocking vital proteins that the weeds require for growth, however, the active ingredient in Roundup has also caused thousands of people to develop Non-Hodgkin lymphoma (T-cell and B-cell lymphoma - NHL) and other types of cancer.
Evidence has come out over the years that Monsanto knew about the risks associated with glyphosate and actively covered them up. If you or a family member have developed Roundup cancer symptoms after exposure to the herbicide, we can help.
Whether you want to file an individual lawsuit, Mass Tort, or join a class-action lawsuit, we can help guide your next steps. Recovering Compensation From a Roundup Lawsuit Payout
If you or a loved one developed cancer after exposure to glyphosate, you may be eligible for Roundup lawsuit settlements. Most successful lawsuits provide the plaintiff with compensation for medical expenses, both those already incurred and anticipated future costs. Loss of income while recovering from cancer treatment is another common category of financial compensation.
You may be also be entitled to subjective damages such as pain and suffering, emotional distress, and loss of pleasure in life. Juries also reward punitive damages in the most egregious of roundup cases when the defendant showed reckless disregard for human life. This is intended more to punish the person or organization than to provide plaintiffs with compensation. Juries also use punitive damages to send a clear message to others who may attempt to get away with the same unlawful actions.
Roundup Cancer Symptoms
Continued exposure to glyphosate has a direct impact on DNA by damaging the body’s cellular structure as well as inhibiting enzymes called cytochrome P450. Unfortunately, a person does not have to work with Roundup directly to face a high risk of contamination. Non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma isn't the only consequence of Monsanto's roundup contamination. Glyphosate has made its way into food, rivers, tap water, and even into human breast milk. Some of the most common cancer symptoms associated with Roundup exposure include:
- Abdominal swelling
- Anemia
- Chest pain
- Enlarged lymph nodes
- Fatigue
- Fever
- Loss of appetite
- Rapid weight loss
- Shortness of breath
Roundup works exactly as intended to kill weeds by inhibiting plant enzymes that create the proteins needed for them to grow. Plants wither and die when they do not have the proper enzymes. The good news for farmers and others is that Roundup kills weeds while leaving nearby healthy crops alone. The bad news is that scientists have determined that Roundup contains a human carcinogen responsible for the development of Non-Hodgkin lymphoma and the following types of cancer:
Bladder Cancer
The National Institutes of Health has determined that people exposed to moderate amounts of Roundup herbicide have a 30 to 60 percent increased likelihood of developing cancer of the bladder or colon, kidney, or rectal cancer.
Brain Cancer
Brain cancer is most prevalent among farmers who used Roundup to kill weeds in their crops, according to a 2007 study Reuters study.
Breast Cancer
The NCBI, which stands for National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI), made a positive connection between glyphosate exposure and breast cancer in 2013. Traces of the herbicide can lead to the growth of breast cancer cells that divide and grow at an uncontrollable rate.
Lung Cancer
In 2015, the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) determined a probable link between glyphosate and lung cancer. Because of this, the agency declared the herbicide ingredient as carcinogenic to human beings.
Prostate Cancer
According to the Agricultural Health Study conducted by the National Cancer Institute, male farmers have a higher cancer risk than many other occupations due to their continual exposure to harmful carcinogens such as glyphosate.
Skin Cancer
Melanoma is the most serious form of skin cancer and can be deadly. The NCBI estimates that people routinely exposed to the active ingredients in Roundup face an increased cancer risk of 80 percent.
Testicular Cancer
Testicular and other types of cancer of the male reproductive system are more common among men whose occupation requires them to apply pesticides on a regular basis.
Side Effects of Monsanto Roundup Weed Killer Exposure
Pregnant mothers exposed to Roundup may face an increased risk of giving birth to a baby with a severe birth defect as well as miscarriage, stillbirth, and spontaneous abortion. Babies born to mothers who live within two-thirds of a mile from a crop sprayed with Roundup have more than a two-fold risk of having one or more of these conditions present at birth:
- Anencephaly
- Autism
- Growth hormone deficiency
- Heart defects
- Neural tube defects
- Significantly smaller penis size in newborn males
Besides the increased risk of cancer, exposure to the primary ingredient in Roundup also increases the likelihood of these health conditions:
Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease
- Kidney disease
- Liver disease
- Respiratory ailments
- Skin diseases
You have the legal right to retain an attorney to file a personal injury or wrongful death lawsuit against Monsanto regardless of your specific illness or loved one’s cause of death. Our firm deals with many types of Roundup lawsuit settlements and not just those initiated by people with cancer or their survivors.
Monsanto Roundup Contamination
Traces of glyphosate have appeared in several popular snack foods and cereals in addition to naturally occurring within the environment, overlooked by the environmental protection agency (EPA) and the world health organization. Unfortunately, the human body is intolerant to glyphosate and people can develop complications even when exposed to extremely low levels of it. Not only is it impossible to wash the residue off food, it remains once the food has been baked, cooked, or frozen. After the chemical stared appearing in urine and breast milk, health experts urged the Food and Drug Administration to eliminate consumer exposure by reducing acceptable levels to the point where it cannot contaminate the environment or the human body.
Roundup Cancer Lawsuit Settlements Against Bayer
Courts across the United States are currently deciding approximately 450 lawsuits against Monsanto, the makers of Roundup. Many of these are Roundup cancer lawsuit settlements initiated as class action lawsuits. Recently in Northern District Of California State, August of 2018, a jury for the Superior State Court of California at San Francisco awarded groundskeeper Dewayne Johnson a Roundup lawsuit payout of $289 million dollars after he developed cancer from continuous exposure to this popular weed killer. The news of the California jury award went viral as the roundup settlement of the school groundskeeper captured the hearts and minds of the nation after his use of roundup. The continuous multidistrict litigation, MDL 2741, has obtained verdicts in three bellwether cancer trials.
What is especially unusual about Johnson’s case is that more than $250 million dollars of his roundup lawsuit settlement were in the form of punitive damages against Monsanto. The verdict in the case gave hope to thousands of people across the country whose diagnosis of cancer is directly related to their exposure to Roundup. More than 4,000 individual and class action lawsuits have been initiated against Monsanto nationwide in state and federal court. In addition, approximately 10,000 people have retained a Roundup cancer lawyer in hopes of receiving compensation through a Roundup class action lawsuit payout.
From the infamous roundup litigation, the shock of Monsanto's Roundup weed killer and the type of cancer like non-Hodgkin lymphoma shocked homeowners in our home state of New York. Without the plaintiff's lawyers, the nation would have never known about this weed killer as a probable human carcinogen. The actions by people who have suffered the effects of a serious disease or lost a loved one are sending a clear message to Monsanto that its deliberate concealment of the dangerous properties of glyphosate will no longer be tolerated. People are understandably outraged and have the right to retain an attorney to move forward with Roundup cancer lawsuit settlements.
It is past time for the company to be held accountable for the extensive damage it has caused to the health and livelihood of thousands of Americans. Working to support yourself and your family should never result in serious illness or preventable death due to the negligent actions of a herbicide manufacturer.
