Upper East Side, New York -- An 84-year-old New York socialite, Nahid Taghinia-Milani, was fatally injured while walking on the Upper East Side when a Land Rover SUV jumped the sidewalk and stuck her on Friday.
According to witnesses, the Land Rover jumped over on to the sidewalk while it was trying to make a left turn at the corner onto 79th street from Madison Avenue. The driver of the Land Rover stayed at the scene and cooperated with the investigators and police regarding the accident.
Witnesses report the victim, identified by local police as Nahid Taghinia-Milani, mother to a Chelsea art gallerist, was found unconscious and unresponsive with head and body trauma from the incident. Unfortunately, when paramedics arrived at the scene it was too late and Taghinia-Milani was pronounced deceased.
Local residents are concerned about pedestrian accidents and claim that the intersection is becoming very dangerous, as this is the third accident within a short period. Investigators are still examining the case, and no arrests have been made as of yet.
We extend our deepest sympathies, and our hearts go out to the family of Nahid Taghinia-Milani in the wake of this tragic accident.
Pedestrian accidents similar to this highlight the necessity for more cautious driving. Because pedestrians are unprotected, when they are involved in a motor vehicle accident they have a greater chance of sustaining serious, or even fatal injuries.
While pedestrian fatalities have decreased nearly thirty-percent - a trend many attributes to Mayor Bill de Blasio's plan, Vision Zero, and it's implementation of lower speed limits - these incidents still occur far too frequently in New York.
According to the New York State Department of Vehicles, crashes involving a pedestrian result in over 25-percent of all auto accident deaths every year, while accounting for less than 10-percent of all motor vehicle collisions.
These stark statistics demonstrate a greater need for drivers to follow laws designed to prevent pedestrian-involved incidents, including the New York State Vehicle and Traffic Law and the New York City Traffic Rules and Regulations.
