On Tuesday, a ten-year-old girl was fatally struck by a school bus in Brooklyn on her way to school. The beautiful girl who sadly lost her life was a shining star that was deeply loved by her family and wanted to be a veterinarian when she grew up. A bus driver suddenly took her life with no passengers on his bus, while turning and not properly paying attention to where he was. There was no reason this accident needed to occur, and there does not appear to be any information that would indicate that this accident was not avoidable. Today just two miles from Tuesday's accident, another school zone ultimately became a danger zone. Another tragic accident happened while a 7-year-old boy was crossing the road in Brooklyn with his mother when he was struck and killed by a car. Imagine walking with your child at one moment and then having that child taken from you. In a second, the 7-year-old boy was torn from his family, and the sadness will endure forever.
In New York, we are all reminded of how precious life is. Tragically, two fatal accidents have sadly taken the lives of young children who had their entire lives ahead of them. Bus operators must receive regular training and must be screened and closed supervised, directed, and controlled so that they understand that their responsibility is enormous.
Not only bus operators but also every citizen that operates a vehicle in and around school zones and school areas must exercise the highest amount of caution.
