On Tuesday, a ten-year-old girl was fatally struck by a school bus in Brooklyn on her way to school. The beautiful girl who sadly lost her life was a shining star that was deeply loved by her family and wanted to be a veterinarian when she grew up. A bus driver suddenly took her life with no passengers on his bus, while turning and not properly paying attention to where he was. There was no reason this accident needed to occur, and there does not appear to be any information that would indicate that this accident was not avoidable. Carelessness is a reminder for us all that when we drive, we must be extremely attentive at all times.
"While the family of this beautiful child suffers her loss today, the actions of another have shown New York that we are not paying close enough attention to what we are doing and that we are distracted from what is most important. Our responsibilities to ourselves and our families and the citizens of our city around us." — Howard Raphaelson, NYC Personal Injury Lawyer at Raphaelson & Levine
Today just two miles from Tuesday's accident, another school zone ultimately became a danger zone. Another tragic accident happened while a 7-year-old boy was crossing the road in Brooklyn with his mother when he was struck and killed by a car. Imagine walking with your child at one moment and then having that child taken from you. In a second, the 7-year-old boy was torn from his family, and the sadness will endure forever.
In New York, we are all reminded of how precious life is. Tragically, two fatal accidents have sadly taken the lives of young children who had their entire lives ahead of them. While it is true that accidents happen, accidents also are avoidable, and it is the responsibility of our schools to ensure that not only are our children are safe in school, but that they are provided safe passage to and from school.
We are relying on bus operators to bring our children back and forth safely every day. As parents, we let our children go into the control of others; those individuals that we trust must honor that trust by undertaking the safest practices available. Bus operators must receive regular training and must be screened and closed supervised, directed, and controlled so that they understand that their responsibility is enormous.
Not only bus operators but also every citizen that operates a vehicle in and around school zones and school areas must exercise the highest amount of caution. Of course, safe traveling is essential everywhere, but our children are our precious gifts, and Raphaelson & Levine Law Firm believes that the duty to protect them is our greatest duty.
Two needless and tragic accidents have brought great sadness to the city of New York. We are all reminded to be safe, stay off our cell phones while driving, stay within the speed limit, and exercise the most significant amount of caution at all times.
Our law firm has made it our life's work helping families of accident victims. More than anything, we pride ourselves on being a source of support for the people we represent.
